Momentary Significance: a solo show by Emily Jolley

Updated: Apr 28

Momentary Significance: an exhibition of abstract expressionist paintings by Emily Jolley will be open from Thursday the 2nd until Tuesday the 28th of May in the beautiful gallery space of Art and Soul in St Neots.

Private View: Friday 3 May 6.30 till 8pm

About the artwork

Recent paintings have evolved from work inspired by experiences and observation of the outside world (such as ‘Swallow Flight 2’ and ‘Outgoing summer’) to become more introspective, reflecting directly on thoughts and feelings.

The ‘shards and ashes’ series developed in response to personal circumstances and literature, especially this quote which was pinned to the studio wall:

‘These new experiences glittered like shards of glass against the ashes of what had gone before.’  (Unbecoming, Sarah Jolley)

The ‘red flags’ series is a meditation on aspects of our relationships – with people, places, things; the most dramatic being a large 4-panel work ‘swell, pierce, bend, break.’ The materials used, which are undisguised, speak directly of strength balanced with fragility - the board itself being manufactured from shreds combined for new purpose - while adding to the raw aesthetic of the artwork.

‘Oracular’, the most recent painting, represents another shift in interest and speaks to the artists’ dilemma: while feeling driven to perhaps introduce more overt storytelling through her art, she wishes the work to resonate with the viewer (or not) on their own terms, and not to give too much away.
