This abstract expressionist painting started during a moment of pain and rage channelled into fearless creation. What developed is a meditation on relationships and what they can do to us. It’s overarching title, Red Flags, is intentionally on-the-nose: Spot the bright red triangles! But day-to-day, do you notice things that should sound alarm bells? The panels’ assigned sub-titles - swell, pierce, bend, break – are similarly overt references to the painted forms and also evoke experiences. The sinuous forms in the work, picked out from and highlighting the remaining negative spaces, interlock and bend around each other in a rhythmic but jarring composition. You can journey from one to another. The OSB panels are at once robust and fragile – strength comes from a mass of fragments, but they fray at the edges. It is large, bright and bold, flowing and poetic. It silently screams ‘pay attention’.
