A real joy of the Keate Family Arts Trust and it's collection, from my point of view, is the value it places on art for arts' sake. The range of works demonstrates the confidence to accumulate artworks by art world heavy-hitters and lesser/unknown artists alike. It exemplifies a realistic approach to collecting art according to the tastes and budget of individuals - starting with the founder and added to by later generations. The founder, David Keate, was himself an artist creating collages and sculptures from giant hogweed, several of which are on permanent display at the house. The Trust was established so that his collected artworks could be made available to the general public to view and enjoy, with the particular hope that other artists would be encouraged and inspired. It's a real delight to be working with the Trust.
More about the show:
Most of the work on exhibition comes from the Keate Family Arts Trust (KFAT) collection of mid- to late- c20th artworks. Featured works, listed below, have been selected by and are presented alongside works by Emily Jolley.
Emily is an artist based in Cambridgeshire specialising in elegant and expressive abstract paintings. She is inspired by the natural world and the connections and transience of our daily lives.
The title for the show, Scintilla, meaning a spark or a fragment, evokes themes that guided the curation including inspirations for abstraction; pieces/coming together; and choice of artworks that highlight something of the nature of the house and collection, of which only a small part is included.
Curation of the entrance hall introduces the exhibition themes, guiding visitors through to the sitting room where key works include Emily’s ‘Quince’ - a seminal work for her practice, inspired by looking up through branches during her daily walks to her studio while studying for her BA – which speaks directly to the quince which generously swathes the front of the house, dappling the light to the interior.
Smaller works include lino monotypes, linking with the KFAT interest in print editions. Prints by Barbara Hepworth, Georges Braque, and Paul Sutton punctuate the walls alongside more recent paintings by Emily.
The garden room focusses on inviting the outside in and changing states/seasons exemplified by a John Piper etching The Seasons: Winter and Emily’s Outgoing Summer in gouache and emulsion paint.

In his tiny hand writing he records his failures - DEAD - and his triumphs - ORANGE!...I rescued all these labels and made this piece and others using scrap timber and nails found in the potting shed.’
